Stand Up Against Poverty and Inequality

Stand Against Poverty

End poverty by 2015. This is the historic promise 189 world leaders made at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 when they signed onto the Millennium Declaration and agreed to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

  • Goal 1        End Hunger & Extreme Poverty
  • Goal 2        Universal Education
  • Goal 3        Gender Equity
  • Goal 4        Child Health
  • Goal 5        Maternal Health
  • Goal 6        Combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases
  • Goal 7        Environmental Sustainability
  • Goal 8        Global Partnership

In the 9 years following; these goals have acted as a global framework towards eradicating poverty and inequality around the world.

In 2009 we are over halfway to the 2015 deadline and there is still much more to be achieved. Each day, 25 000 children die as a result of extreme poverty and nearly 1 billion of the world’s population exist on $1 a day. We live in a time where some of us are granted with abundant prosperity and opportunity while others still live in extreme poverty and hardship.

The MDGs are an eight-point road map with measurable targets and clear deadlines for improving the lives of the world’s poorest people. World leaders have agreed to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

Let us remind them of the pledge they made and that these promises must be kept! In 2009 we have the wealth, resources and technology to achieve these goals. Let us hope that we also have the want and desire.

Each one of us has a voice and our voice can be heard. It’s up to us to make sure leaders follow through on these commitments. Join the global campaign to ‘Stand Up’ and take action against Poverty and Inequality.

This is a global event taking place this weekend 16th -18th of October. Last year, more than 116 million Stood Up and Took Action to end poverty in support of the Millennium Development Goals. This year, join the growing movement and add your voice to the world’s call to action.

This is an exciting opportunity to unite with millions of people around the world. Connect with your fellow humans on a global scale and let it be known that we care, we know and that we want an end to poverty and inequality. Change can be achieved!!!

Stand with us on October 16-18.
