Please give : Haiti earthquake appeals

by A. Simplicity on January 18, 2010

In the meantime please consider those in need; and if you haven’t already done so, please give what you can to help those in Haiti. There are wonderful aid organisations on the ground now working to save lives and help and protect all of those devastated by this tragedy. Please consider that collectively we can make a big difference by supporting these organisations in the invaluable work. [...]

The challenge to change ourselves…

by A. Simplicity on January 8, 2010

positive change

There are many times in our lives when we feel helpless; when we feel as though we are powerless to challenge the way things are. Situations big and small can be hard to confront and overcome, but we are, in the face of this, always able to change ourselves. [...]

Vegetarianism and Choice

by A. Simplicity on December 18, 2009

life journey

“Vegetarianism isn’t about fanatical personal purity, it’s about having some perspective. Move at your own pace; no one’s keeping score. Vegetarianism isn’t about scarcity, it’s about abundance. It’s not about restriction, it’s about liberation. Not about what we’re against but what we’re for; not for some far-off time but for right now. For me going vegetarian is less about becoming something and more about being true to ourselves.” ~Michael Gregor MD [...]

life journey

“The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied…but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing.” ~John Berger [...]

tiny pushes…

by A. Simplicity on December 7, 2009

a simple life

“I long to accomplish great and noble tasks, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along, not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker.”

~ Helen Keller

I understand that emissions’ trading scheme is being considered as a way to reduce carbon in the atmosphere and this is a good thing. I simply wish we would hear more about other ways of reducing our environmental impact as well.

Like governments and big companies investing in clean energy, renewable resources, recycled materials and a reduction in consumption and dirty manufacturing process. Or conservation of natural habitats, sustainable farming and building methods, there are so many things that we all can do to reduce the effects of pollution and waste on our planet. There is more to our “environmental crisis” than just carbon.

Top 5 small, simple steps to overcome a consumer mentality!!

by A. Simplicity on November 30, 2009

consumer culture

It could be said we don’t often consider what we already have and what truly makes us happy. In the modern world there are many of us striving to get what we don’t need to make us happy; living a lifestyle based on having, obtaining and needing more and more stuff to ‘feel’ happy and successful.

Happiness based on materialistic wealth is a scary pursuit, we can as Eric Hoffer states; never get enough to reach a state of happiness, as the very bases of this mentality is to always have more. [...]

positive motivation

To inspire positive drive and ignite a determination for achievable change we need to escape from the notion of fear; the ‘crisis’ attached to the social and environmental challenges we currently face… It is the positive elements in life that establish true desire and underpin real values. With optimism, conviction and certainty in our hearts we avoid giving in to the notions of fear and crisis. Positive change is achievable for all of us and is not dictated by constraints.

grown your own vegetables

Our modern world loves to provide us with packaged convenience and perfection and the fruit and vegetables available from our supermarket are no exception. And yet many of us are making the switch to local produce as a means to have a more sustainable and positive impact.

Through little rituals and thoughts we spin the world…

by A. Simplicity on November 19, 2009

find happiness

“The Hopi Indians of Arizona believe that our daily rituals and prayers literally keep this world spinning on its axis. For me, feeding the seagulls is one of those everyday prayers.”
